University of South Alabama

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital. Our volunteers provide valuable service to our patients, visitors and staff while enjoying a unique opportunity for personal growth and satisfaction. Volunteers serve throughout the hospital in patient and non-patient care areas, seven days a week. Minimum age to volunteer is 14 years old.

There are several steps in becoming a volunteer...

1. Submit an Application and Other Documentation.

  • Health Assessment
  • Copy of Immunization Record (blue card) indicating Immunizations/immunity to Measles/Mumps/Rubella (2 doses); 1 dose if born before 1957 and your declaration of having had chicken pox or documentation of immunity to chicken pox by titer, or by having had 2 chicken pox vaccinations.
  • Documentation of TB Test within the past 12 months
  • Recommendation Letters (2) non-relative; for teens, letters must be from school-personnel
  • Copy of Driver’s License/School ID
  • Current Grade Report (2.5 GPA) teen volunteer requirement
  • Background Screening for applicants age 18 and older

2. Application Review and Invitation to Attend an Orientation.

Once we review and accept your application, we will invite you to an orientation. Due to the interest in the volunteer program and extensive background review, the application review process may take several weeks.

  • Adult Orienteation - Adult orientations are held monthly; approved applicants will be notified of upcoming orientation dates and times.

  • Teenage Orientation and Session - We accept teenage volunteers into the program once during the year to volunteer for the summer program. Summer teenage volunteers may continue during the school year, with the approval of Volunteer Services. Applications for the Teenage Volunteer Program are accepted during the month of April 2012. The 2012 Teen Volunteer Summer Session is full. We will begin taking applications for 2013 Teen Volunteer Program on January 1, 2013.

    Summer Session: June 1 – July 20, 2012

3. Follow-up interview.

At a follow-up interview, we will match your availability and interests with volunteer opportunities and create your schedule. We will also review other requirements:

  • 2nd step of Tuberculosis (TB) testing: In order to begin volunteering at USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital you must have a 2 – step TB Skin test. It is YOUR responsibility to have the first TB skin test placed and read. Once you are accepted into our volunteer program and have been through orientation we will offer the 2nd TB test free of charge. BUT the 2nd TB test MUST be placed and read BEFORE you begin volunteering. If you have had BCG in the past, you are not exempt from this policy unless you have had a positive PPD and can provide documentation (copy of medical documentation of positive PPD report, report of your chest x-ray and a copy of your evaluation for TB prevention including any medical treatment you received). You should not have further TB testing. USACWH staff will conduct a symptom check instead of a TB test.

  • Purchase uniform: Apron (females) $15; Polo shirt (male) $22.

  • Make a service commitment! Adults: one 4 hour shift weekly for 6 continuous months; Teens: Summer Session (4 hours/week), School-year Session (2 hours/week).

If you have any questions, please call 415-1123. We look forward to hearing from you!

Application does not guarantee acceptance/placement. Acceptance/placement is subject to volunteer assignment availability.
